If this season has shown us anything, it has shown us that the Pittsburgh Penguins need to pay Tristan Jarry. The NHL trade deadline is another day closer and the Pittsburgh Penguins are still riding with the same lineup that needs a spark. Most notably, the Penguins are likely in search for some sort of replacement at third line center. They don’t necessarily want to trade away Jeff Carter, but a new face that pushes Carter to the wing and keep Teddy Blueger on the fourth line. What if the Penguins brought back an old face? Maybe the same third line center that won two Stanley Cups with the Penguins? According to Sheng Peng on Fifth Avenue Faceoff, Nick Bonino still has what it takes to be a solid bottom six center. Not necessarily in the scoring department, but as a contributor defensively while being a sneaky clutch threat. Peng made note that since Bonino is aging and on an expiring deal, the asking price wouldn’t be huge. Bonino is a few months away from turning 35 and currently makes $2.05 million against the salary cap. While he does carry a modified no-trade clause, it’s likely he’d accept a deal to return to the team he won a pair of Cups with. Based on his numbers, however, the wisest move would be to pen him in on the fourth line in Pittsburgh. The Penguins want to upgrade their third line center, but Bonino doesn’t have the same production anymore. In 51 games this season, Bonino has only recorded 18 points off of a clean nine goals and nine assists. Bonino is a cheap, veteran option who could help restructure the Penguins bottom six, if that is an option they decide to run with. The Penguins won’t have to go far to see Bonino first hand, as they take him and the Sharks on tonight in San Jose.
