The Pittsburgh Penguins have fallen out of playoff positioning with three weeks left in the season, but are they better off missing the postseason? Things are really getting out of hand with Tristan Jarry and his inability to remain healthy and between the pipes for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Prior to puck drop against the Dallas Stars, not only was Dustin Tokarski recalled on an emergency basis, but head coach Mike Sullivan stated that Jarry would be out with a lower-body injury. Since it was the second half of a back-to-back, it’s not likely that Casey DeSmith was going to be the starter anyway, but the optics weren’t great. Sullivan didn’t say the decision to keep Jarry completely out of the game was due to precaution or to ensure extra rest; instead we were told there’s no timetable for a return. Giving Jarry a few days of guaranteed rest makes sense, after all he has dealt with multiple injuries this year and was coming off of making six straight starts. It’s not immediately clear if this is the same injury that has hampered Jarry since the Winter Classic, but Sullivan stated not too long ago that Jarry is fully healthy again. According to Sullivan, it was no longer an injury that was slowing him down, rather still adjusting and getting back into game shape. In his previous two appearances, Jarry seemed to have found his health and speed; he played well despite a loss to the Ottawa Senators, but played arguably his best game of the season in a big win over the Colorado Avalanche. The conversation following that game surrounded around Jarry’s return to form, but just hours later that all came crashing down. Where do the Penguins go from here? What does the offseason look like for Jarry? Unless this was an instance of a stress-free day off to mend something in Jarry, the Penguins might just have to plug their nose and dive in with DeSmith as the starter for the rest of the year. And if Jarry isn’t back by Saturday against the Washington Capitals, that might be it for him in Pittsburgh. It’s a contract year for Jarry, and he might be looking for a big pay day, but the Penguins aren’t in any place to give it to him. There have been too many injuries, and when healthy, there have been too many inconsistencies all season. The Penguins can’t keep having the same issues pop up around one of the most important positions in the sport.
