Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry discusses working his way back since returning from injury and trying to find a rhythm. PITTSBURGH - Under 24 hours after 18,000 fans of the Pittsburgh Penguins chanted for general manager Ron Hextall to be fired, he spoke about his plans regarding the NHL trade deadline. Hextall stated that despite the Penguins current slump, there are no plans to become a seller at the deadline and they’re still focused on improving the team. “Our intent is to continue to try and make this team better,” Hextall said. “This year and years beyond this year to stay competitive.” Hextall eluded to the re-signings of Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang as reasons why the Penguins will remain a competitive team. “We made that commitment last summer with our core,” Hextall said. “Those guys have played well. The hardest part of our team right now is the volatility.” In fairness to the core of Malkin, Letang, and obviously Sidney Crosby, they are three of the best players on the team right now. Despite their age, each of them are doing all they can to help the team win. Crosby has 69 points (25G-44A) in 57 games, Malkin has 58 points (21G-37A) also in 57 games, and Letang leads defensive scoring with 25 points (7G-18A) in 39 games. Those three want to win, it’s always been their focus since arriving in Pittsburgh almost 20 years ago. If they want to make a run at the postseason, the front office owes it to them to do something about it. That seems to be Hextall’s plan; he is still searching the market and looking for a way to improve the team. “I do believe we can make the playoffs,” Hextall said. “The prices are high; they always are at this time of year. We’ll continue to monitor the prices… we’ll ty and make our team better.” The Penguins have multiple holes that need filled and a number of problems that need fixed; it’s going to take more than one move, but Hextall is running out of time.
