Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Kris Letang discusses the team's 2-1 overtime victory over the Colorado Avalanche. PITTSBURGH - In the NHL, and especially for the Pittsburgh Penguins, one of the biggest struggles is finding high-value players at an affordable cost. The Penguins are one of many teams slammed up against the salary cap ceiling and are looking for savings on useful on-ice talent. The Athletic [https://theathletic.com/3989431/2023/01/30/nhl-player-cards-pittsburgh-penguins-2/] recently did player cards for almost every player in the NHL, and those cards featured where their performance places their market value compared to what they are actually making. Bet Pennsylvania [https://www.betpennsylvania.com/news/who-is-currently-the-most-undervalued-among-pittsburgh-penguins] ran a similar test focusing on salary values for the Penguins and found that a few players were playing well above their paycheck. Their goal was to find the most undervalued player on the Penguins roster by looking at point shares and dividing that by their salary. The findings showed that defenseman P.O. Joseph has been the Penguins most undervalued player with a $343,750 value. Joseph carries a 2.4 point share and a cap hit of $825,000 for this season and next. The Athletic’s findings pretty well matched that of Bet Pennsylvania, recording that Joseph’s market value is as high as $5.1 million. If you’ve seen Joseph play, even for a shift this season, you can see how that would work out. Joseph is playing with incredible speed and confidence, made even more special considering he seemed to be outplayed by Ty Smith during the preseason and training camp. According to Ben Pennsylvania, both Penguins goalie are the next two players most undervalued by the team. Casey DeSmith is undervalued at a $486,486 clip and Tristan Jarry at $546,875. With the final stretch of the season here, the Penguins are hoping more players can find themselves on lists like this. Great skill for a low value is hard to find in hockey, but Joseph has been a diamond in the rough for the Penguins.
