Challenging Gretzky Theory, Seattle Missing 99% Of Shots It HAS Taken
Four games into the NHL season, the Seattle Kraken and Carolina Hurricanes have had diametrically opposite results. That makes for an intriguing match up Thursday night at Climate Pledge Arena.
The differences go far beyond level of success - Carolina 3-1-0, Seattle 0-3-1. The Hurricanes have exclusively played raucous, high-scoring affairs: wins by 5-3, 6-5 and 6-3, and a surprising 6-3 stumble to the Ducks in Anaheim.
Their power play is roaring (26%), their penalty kill sputtering (79%). They're league-best in goals-per-game, 28th in goals-against.
That should provide offensive hope to the Kraken, who have been so starved for scoring, they're challenging the Great One.
Wayne Gretzky famously said, "You miss 100 percent of the shots you don't take." In four games, according to Natural Stat Trick, the Kraken have attempted 269 shots - and scored three goals. Counting off-target and blocked shots, that's a miss rate of 99 percent.
