Binnington Named Starter For Canada In 4 Nations Face-Off Opener

Blues goalie to play against Sweden in tournament opener on Wednesday, gets nod over Adin Hill of Vegas

Jordan Binnington will get the spotlight. Just the way the St. Louis Blues goalie likes it.

Binnington was named the starting goalie for Canada in the opener of the 4 Nations Face-Off when it takes on Sweden at Bell Centre in Montreal on Wednesday (7 p.m. CT; MAX, truTV, TNT, SN, TVAS).

Binnington, who has had an up and down season with the Blues this season, posting a 15-19-4 record with a 2.89 goals-against average and .897 save percentage, was chosen over Adin Hill of the Vegas Golden Knights and Sam Montembeault of the hometown Montreal Canadiens.

Binnington is no stranger to the spotlight, and he exhibited himself well in his rookie season when the Blues won their first Stanley Cup in Game 7 against the Boston Bruins when he played brilliantly to become the first rookie in NHL history to win all 16 postseason games.

Can he carry the torch for Canada? Time will tell. But for a nation with high expectations, the Blues goalie will get the opportunity to shine on a bright stage once again. Which is something Binnington relishes.

"That's something you've kind of visualized your whole life doing in your dreams," Binnington tole The Hockey News on Dec. 4. 

Along with Binnington, Blues defenseman Colton Parayko will represent Canada and according to media reports, he's been paired with Winnipeg Jets defenseman Josh Morrissey.
