LOUIS -- It may not go down as one of those blockbuster deals, or one that the St. Louis Blues look back on ad say it was the steal of the century, but it was a pretty solid, steady move for a player that ended his career in the Gateway City.
On this date 40 years ago, the Blues acquired gritty forward Rick Meagher and a 12th round pick (Bill Butler) in the 1986 NHL Draft from the New Jersey Devils for Perry Anderson.
Meagher was a middle six forward that came to the Blues and played six seasons, putting up double-digit goals in the first four, including 18 in 1986-87 and 1987-88, and was a workhorse for the franchise; he was named the 11th captain in franchise history in 1989-90.
Meagher would play 12 seasons in the NHL and finish with 309 points (144 goals, 165 assists) in 691 games, including 161 points (73 goals, 88 assists) in 413 games with the Blues and was part of one Norris Division championship (1986-87) and four second-place finishes.
Anderson was a sixth-round pick by the Blues in 1980 and put up his best season in St. Louis his final season in 1884-85 (18 points; nine goals, nine assists) in 71 games; his best seasons with the Devils were in his first two years there with 19 points in 1985-86 (seven goals, 12 assists) and 1986-87 (10 goals, nine assists).
Anderson spent five seasons with the Devils before finishing his career with the San Jose Sharks in 1991-92.
Needless to say, the Blues got the better of this deal.
