Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports - 5 Players You Didn't Know the Lightning Drafted

The Tampa Bay Lightning have lately been notorious for trading away a slew of draft picks at the deadline to acquire "win-now" pieces. Nick Paul, Brandon Hagel and Tanner Jeannot are a few examples of these pieces that the team has picked up in their efforts to add Stanley Cups to their trophy case.

When looking through their draft history, some interesting names pop up, that most people wouldn't know about. Here are five players you didn't know the Lightning drafted.

    Connor Ingram

The Arizona Coyotes have been running Connor Ingram and Karel Vejmelka as their goaltending tandem this season. Although the former was the starting netminder for their infamous winning streak against the NHL's last five Stanley Cup Winners earlier this season - Ingram was a huge part of that.

Ingram was drafted 88th overall in the 2016 draft by the Lightning. He remained with the organization until 2019, when he was traded to the Nashville Predators for a 7th round pick in the 2021 draft.

    Brent Gretzky

Wayne Gretzky had a historic career and set records left, right and center during his tenure with the Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers. He had a brother drafted into the NHL as well - Brent Gretzky.

Brent was the youngest of Gretzky brothers, with current assistant general manager of the Oilers - Keith Gretzky - being the middle child. Brent was a center drafted 49th overall in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft. He would go on to play 13 games with the Lightning between the 1993-94 & 1994-95 seasons. He played against Wayne once, reportedly losing all but one faceoff against his legendary brother.

    Tony DeAngelo

Tony DeAngelo has made his way around the NHL having been a part of five different organizations during his career. Presently with the Carolina Hurricanes, he was initially drafted in 2014 by the Lightning.

A prized first round pick - who never played an NHL game with the Lightning - but he spend a season playing for the Syracuse Crunch one year after his draft year. He played 69 games collecting 43 points in the process.

In the summer of 2016 he was first traded from the Lightning to the Arizona Coyotes for a 2016 2nd round pick. Since then he has played for the Rangers, Hurricanes and Philadelphia Flyers.

    Radko Gudas

Radko Gudas has garnered a reputation for being one of the biggest hitters in the entire NHL. His hits are often on highlight reels, and for good reason. The 6-foot-0 208lbs defenseman isn't towering, but has 2650 hits recorded over his 12-year career.

Gudas was drafted by the Lightning 66th overall in the 2010 NHL entry draft. He played 126 games (across three seasons) for the Lightning. He scored 22 points, fired 208 shots, and threw 475 hits.

He was traded to the Flyers in 2015 (along with a 1st round pick) with a 3rd round pick and Braydon Coburn coming to the Lightning in return. Since then he has also played for the Washington Capitals, Florida Panthers, and now the Anaheim Ducks.

    Sheldon Keefe

While he is no longer a player in the NHL, the name Sheldon Keefe should look familiar to many readers - Keefe is currently in his fifth season as the head coach for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Although he has experienced more success as a coach than a player, it all started when he was drafted by the Lightning in 1999. A second round pick (47th overall) Keefe would go on to play 125 NHL games and score 24 points - all with the Lightning.

In 2004-05 he would play his last games as a player, spending four games in the AHL playing for the Utah Grizzlies. A knee injury ended his playing career, but in 2006-07 season he would begin his coaching career - and he has never looked back.
