The Toronto Maple Leafs are placing forward David Kämpf on unconditional waivers for the purpose of contract termination.
Kämpf, 30, has decided to opt out of the remaining two years on his contract, which carried an annual average value of $2.4 million ($4.8 million total).
The move was long expected. After clearing waivers at the beginning of the season and reporting to the AHL's Toronto Marlies, Kämpf played four games, totalling one assist.
But then, he failed to report to the team.
According to Elliotte Friedman, Kämpf was reportedly unhappy with being sent down and was seeking a return to the NHL, whether it was with the Leafs or not.
On Nov. 2, he was suspended without pay, and it ultimately seems as though the two sides were not able to come up with an agreement.
If he clears waivers tomorrow, he will become an unrestricted free agent and can sign with any NHL team.
Kämpf recorded 85 points in 301 games with the Maple Leafs across four seasons.
