Following the Buffalo Sabres 4-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes earlier today, the Maple Leafs now sit alone at the bottom of the Atlantic Division. t's the latest low point for the struggling Leafs team, who haven't been able to find their groove amidst a season plagued with injuries.
Through 22 games, the Maple Leafs are 9-10-3, and hold a minus eight point differential.
Last night's 5-2 loss to the Montréal Canadiens was arguably one of their worst performances of the season. They fell behind 4-0 near the end of the second period, showing their inability to build any momentum and fight through adversity. Despite the high scoring game, their goaltender, Joseph Woll, played well.
In William Nylander's post game press conference he said the fact the team still allowed five goals despite Woll's performance should serve as a "wake up call," and he's right.
The Maple Leafs haven't finished last in the division since the 2009-10 season, where they finished with a miserable 74 points. With a roster consisting of players like Nylander, Auston Matthews, Morgan Reilly and Matthew Knies, there's no excuse for being at the bottom. However, they are just six points out of first place, so a win streak is needed more now than ever.
Rough stretches like these build character, but with a quarter of the season already passed, it's time for the Maple Leafs to pick it up or this season will slip away real soon.
