Last season, Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll teamed up with home builder Mattamy Homes to donate $5,000 to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) for every victory he recorded at Scotiabank Arena, a donation that was doubled if the netminder recorded a shutout.
We now know the total that was donated was $80,000, as the CAMH Foundation took to Instagram to show Woll delivering the check. The donation challenge was first revealed in October. Woll discussed the initiative with TSN’s Mark Masters early in the season, following a 4-1 victory at Scotiabank Arena against the Seattle Kraken.
"Yeah, I think over the past few years I've found how important mental health is and how under-talked about it is sometimes, and there's a fine line of talking about too much and not enough," Woll said. "I'm just really happy that we were able to partner up and do something to get back and put a little more focus in there, and it's a place that holds a special spot in my heart, so it's quite meaningful."
Woll finished with a 13-5-1 record at home during the regular season with one shutout. He also picked up wins in Games 1 and 2 at home against the Florida Panthers at Scotiabank Arena during the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, bringing that final total to $80,000.
Since being drafted by the Maple Leafs in the third round (62nd overall) of the 2016 NHL Draft, Woll has frequently discussed how his mental health journey has helped him navigate the challenging moments of his career, from injury setbacks to performance struggles, before establishing himself in the NHL with the Leafs, Woll emphasized the importance of meditation for his mental well-being and periodically stepped away from social media, though he now returns occasionally.
