Maple Leafs Prospect Rodion Amirov Passes Away Following Battle With Brain Tumor

Rodion Amirov began his battle two years ago after he was diagnosed with a brain tumor.

Martin Jones is now in the mix as the Maple Leafs add to their goaltending depth.

There is some sad news today in the hockey world.

NHL agent Dan Milstein announced on Monday that Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Rodion Amirov has died following a two-year battle with a brain tumor.

"From the moment he received the news, he refused to speak in the negative, determined to enjoy every day, facing it with the same positive attitude he showed during his hockey career," Milstein said in a tweet.

"We will always remember his courage, his desire, his will, his smile, all of the great things about him. We’d like to thank his doctors, who took great care of him. We’d like to thank the Toronto Maple Leafs and his KHL - Salavat Yulayev Ufa team.

"Both did everything possible to help in any way, do whatever was necessary for Rodion and the Amirov family. And we’d like to thank hockey fans all over the world who sent notes of encouragement and best wishes over the past two years. They meant so much to the Amirov family."

Amirov was Toronto's first-round pick (15th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft. The Russian forward signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the club on April 15, 2021. Eight months later, the Maple Leafs revealed that Amirov had been diagnosed with a brain tumor.

The Maple Leafs had reportedly been assisting Amirov with his medical treatments throughout his entire battle, paying for treatments in Germany and in his home country.

“The entire Maple Leafs organization is devastated by this tragic loss,” said Maple Leafs President and Alternate Governor Brendan Shanahan said in a statement. “Over the duration of his courageous battle, Rodion’s positivity inspired everyone around him, and he made lasting impressions with our team and fans in his brief visits to Toronto. It’s incredibly sad to see a young man with so much promise taken from us so soon. We offer our deepest condolences to Rodion’s family and friends as we mourn this loss together.”

We send our condolences to the friends and family of Rodion during this difficult time. Amirov was 21.
