What the Maple Leafs Are Getting in Signing Noah Gregor to a Professional Tryout Contract

Gregor recorded his first-career NHL hat trick with the San Jose Sharks last season.

Martin Jones is now in the mix as the Maple Leafs add to their goaltending depth.

With NHL training camps set to open later this month, the Toronto Maple Leafs are one of many teams looking to bolster their club’s competition with some professional tryouts (PTO).

The Leafs made their first move in that regard by signing 25-year-old forward Noah Gregor to a PTO.

Gregor, a fourth-round draft pick of the San Jose Sharks in 2016 began to take off in the organization during the 2021-22 season where he scored eight goals and added 15 assists in 63 games. His performance earned him an invite to Team Canada at the 2022 IIHF World Championship where he scored twice and added an assist in seven games.

This past season, however, Gregor struggled to replicate the production. Although he finished with 10 goals last season, half of them were in the final weeks of the regular season and Gregor's shooting percentage was among the lowest in the league up until April.

The Sharks elected not to tender Gregor a qualifying offer this past spring, making him an unrestricted free agent.

When on his game, Gregor has the ability to create scoring chances by hounding pucks.

Despite playing in just 57 games last season, Gregor finished eight in hits (97). The six-foot forward could bring a physical presence to a defending bottom-six if he can win a spot out of camp. He can generate a lot of shots at the net.
