The Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman has struggled through his first 13 games of the season. Head coach Sheldon Keefe says the player is injured and working through some things. Toronto Maple Leafs forward David Kampf missed practice on Monday before the team departed to Stockholm, Sweden for a pair of games as part of the 2023 NHL Global Series, but the forward is not expected to miss any action. "He’s going to be fine," Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe said of Kampf. "He just needs some swelling to go down from his face from the clean hit to the head that he took." Keefe referred to a hit delivered by Vancouver Canucks forward Dakota Joshua to Kampf in the first period of Toronto's 5-2 victory on Saturday. After the hit, Maple Leafs defenseman Mark Giordano rushed into Kampf's defense where both he and Joshua and Giordano engaged in a long scrap. Giordano was given an additional two minutes and a 10-minute misconduct for engaging in the hit. Based on the way Keefe worded the hit, it's clear the Maple Leafs head coach thought it was a dirty hit. The league did not discipline Dakota for the hit on Kampf. Kampf also scored his first goal of the game later in the contest as the fourth line had arguably one of the best games on a new look that saw Bobby McMann make his season debut while recording two assists Noah Gregor had a goal and an assist as Ryan Reaves sat as a healthy scratch for the first time this season.
