The Maple Leafs made long-term commitments to Chris Tanev and Oliver Ekman-Larsson. Is it enough to remake the look and feel of Toronto's defense? The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed forward Connor Dewar to a one-year contract, the club announced on Tuesday. The 25-year-old Dewar had filed for salary arbitration after scoring 11 goals and adding eight assists in a season split between the Leafs and Minnesota Wild. The Leafs acquired Dewar from Minnesota at the trade deadline for forward prospect Dmitry Ovchinnikov and a 2026 fourth-round NHL Draft pick. Dewar played in six of the club's seven playoff games in their first-round defeat against the Boston Bruins. Dewar will earn $1.18 million as a result and be a restricted free agent at the end of the 2024-25 season. Sources tell The Hockey News that the Leafs and Dewar were able to avoid an arbitration hearing. Dates for arbitration were set for between July 20-Aug 4, however the NHLPA decided not to publish specific hearing dates this year. UPDATED SALARY CAP PICTURE AND PAYROLL With Dewar signed, the Leafs have approximately $1,275,333 in salary cap space according to PuckPedia.com [https://puckpedia.com/team/toronto-maple-leafs], accounting for 21 players on the roster. The Maple Leafs can carry as little as 20 and as many as 23 players to begin the regular season.
