John Tavares and the Canada Revenue Agency are involved in a legal battle over a reported $8 million discrepancy stemming from his signing bonus in 2018. The NHL's Department of Player Safety fined Marchment $5,000, the maximum allowable for fines under the collective bargaining agreement for his late hit on Maple Leafs defenseman Jake McCabe in the second period of the Leafs' 5-4 win against the Dallas Stars on Wednesday. The Leafs were up 3-2 late in the second period and a retaliatory penalty could have been difficult for Toronto to overcome. "To be honest it was a pretty big time in the game where Caber probably could have two-handed him and taken a penalty, but his composure was really good too," Ryan Reaves said. "Those were a big two points." Keefe was upset at the call and explained following the game on Wednesday that referees told him they "thought it was a good hit." McCabe wasn't present for the team's outdoor practice and neither was defenseman Mark Giordano. "He's a little banged up from yesterday," Keefe said of McCabe. So both he and Giordano took the day." McCabe has four goals and 13 assists in 43 games with the Leafs this season while averaging 20:14 of ice time.
