The Toronto Maple Leafs held their final practice of their regular season opener. Fraser Minten and Noah Gregor earn spots in the opening-night lineup. The Edmonton Oilers have been struggling mightily this season and their goaltending hasn't been an exception by any means. On Tuesday, the club elected to make a change and have decided to waive Jack Campbell for the purposes of assignment to the American Hockey League. The Oilers are 2-8-1 to start the season and have the second-worst NHL record heading into games that were scheduled for Tuesday. In five games, Campbell has a 1-4-0 record with an .873 save percentage. According to DailyFaceoff.com's Frank Seravalli, the Oilers intend to call up Calvin Pickard after Campbell passes the waivers system by 2 p.m. ET on Wednesday. Campbell had a successful tenure with the Maple Leafs from 2020-2022. The goaltender outplayed Frederik Andersen during the 2021 season and set the NHL record of wins to start a regular season at 11 on Apr. 10, 2021. The goaltender signed a five-year, $25 million deal with the Oilers on July 13, 2022. With Edmonton hoping he'd be their No. 1 solution, he's been anything but, and Stuart Skinner outperformed him for the net last season. With a $5 million cap hit, the goaltender will still carry a cap charge of $3.85 million with the Oilers while down with Bakersfield of the AHL. The Oilers have three more seasons committed to the goaltender beyond the 2023-24 campaign. Campbell, was not the only former Maple Leaf on waivers as the Calgary Flames placed forward Dryden Hunt on the wire. Hunt had a very brief stint with the Leafs last season where he recorded a goal in nine games. He was traded to the Flames at the deadline for forward Radim Zohorna (now with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
