The Toronto Maple Leafs still don't know the fate of head coach Sheldon Keefe as they continue to search for a general manager. But now they know they'll be losing an assistant. According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, Carbery is set to become the new head coach of the Washington Capitals. The Capitals later confirmed the news via their Twitter account. Carbery had reportedly been interviewed for vacant head coaching positions with the New York Rangers and Anaheim Ducks. However, he ultimately settled on the Capitals, a franchise he had previously worked with. TSN hockey insider Pierre Lebrun reports Carberry's deal is for four seasons. Carbery served as head coach of Washington's AHL affiliate Hershey Bears franchise. During his tenure, Carbery led the club to a record of 104-50-9-8, good for a.658 points percentage. He was named AHL coach of the year in 2021 before departing in 2021 to become an assistant with the Maple Leafs. Carbery helped run Toronto's offense and power-play duties during his time with the Maple Leafs. In his first season in Toronto, the Leafs had the best power play in the NHL at 27.3 percent. He followed that up with the league's second-best power-play efficiency at 26 percent. How Carbery's position will be replaced in Toronto will be left up to whenever the club names a new general manager. Head Coach Sheldon Keefe has one year remaining on his contract but his fate hasn't been secured for the upcoming season. During a news conference 11 days ago, Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan said that any other personnel decisions will be left to a general manager. Toronto elected not to renew the contract of GM Kyle Dubas, who is under contract until June 30.
