Shane Doan becomes an assistant to Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving as the club shores up its deep ties to Arizona. Will that be enough to extend Auston Matthews? Can an agreement be coming between the Luke Schenn and the Toronto Maple Leafs. According to Rick Dhaliwal, talks between the defenseman and the club are ongoing with the 33-year-old defenseman seeking a raise and stability. "Schenn is obviously going to get a well-deserved bump in pay, but he's obviously going to look for some term, no surprise there and some trade protection after bouncing around so much the last few years," Dhaliwal said on his Donnie and Dhali [https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCc13JN0nsdFN_CuNYEQiERg] show. Schenn is coming off a two-year, $1.7 million contract he signed with the Vancouver Canucks in 2021 and hasn't earned more than $1.25 million in a season since the 2015-16 season. He also hasn't been on a contract longer than two years in that span. The Maple Leafs acquired Schenn from the Canucks in February in exchange for a third-round draft pick. Originally expected to be a bottom-pair or seventh defensive option, Schenn quickly rose up the depth chart and found himself consistently playing top-four minutes alongside Morgan Rielly during the 2023 Stanley Cup playoffs. During the first round of the playoffs, Schenn was on the ice for seven goals and just one goal against at even strength. In their second round against the Florida Panthers, Schenn was on the ice for three goals and just one against at even strength, despite losing in five games. Dhaliwal also added that current Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving was in pursuit of Schenn in February while with the Calgary Flames. If the Leafs and Schenn do come to terms on a deal soon, it would be the first player transaction under Treliving since being officially named general manager on May 31.
