The Toronto Maple Leafs are making a captaincy change. The Hockey News breaks down why Auston Matthews will become the 26th captain in franchise history. Nick Robertson will remain a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs The forward signed a brand new one-year deal worth $875,000, ending a summer-long stalemate with the club. Robertson ended questions about his future and will be at Maple Leafs training camp next week. In June, TSN's Chris Johnston reported that Robertson did not want to return and had requested a trade. The Maple Leafs did not want to move the speedy forward. Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving addressed Robertson's request with the media during free agency and stressed how much opportunity there was for Robertson this season. On Monday, TSN's Darren Dreger indicated that he felt the stalemate would resolve itself, particularly with NHL training camps set to open next. The Maple Leafs are somewhat thin at left wing. Combined with a new head coach in Craig Berube, Robertson has a chance to prove himself to be an everyday player on the team's top-nine forward group. Drafted by the Maple Leafs in the second round (53rd overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft, Robertson has 17 goals and 17 assists in 87 games over four seasons. He had his best season so far in 2023-24 with 14 goals and 13 assists in 56 games. Although Robertson initially wanted a change of scenery he had very little leverage as a restricted free agent with no arbitration rights. After this new deal, Robertson will be a restricted free agent. He will have arbitration rights next summer if it gets to that point. MAPLE LEAFS SALARY CAP SITUATION FOLLOWING ROBERTSON DEAL The Leafs get Robertson at a very cap-friendly hit of $875,000. According to Puckpedia.com, the Leafs have $400,333 in salary cap space remaining with a roster consisting of 13 forwards, seven defensemen and two goaltenders.
