Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports - Are the Coyotes and Ducks a Rivalry in the Making?

Tonight marks the second meeting of the season between the Anaheim Ducks and Arizona Coyotes.

In their last matchup on October 21, Arizona defeated Anaheim 2-1 but more importantly, it got real chippy between the two teams.

Led by forward Liam O’Brien, the game took a very physical tone as there were multiple scrums and fights throughout the 60 minutes of play.

This all brings up an important question, are the Coyotes and Ducks rivals?

Even based on their games last season, the Coyotes and Ducks really seemed not to like each other one bit.

While both teams failed to make the playoffs, their matchups were intense and even seemed personal at some points which is why it was no surprise the manner in which they competed just over a week ago.

A rivalry consists of two teams that feed off each other and play at an extremely physical level which is starting to happen between the Coyotes and Ducks.

Another key aspect of a rivalry is team success.

Arizona and Anaheim may not have generated a ton of team success over the past couple of years but what is promising about this potential rivalry is the similar paths they are both on.

The Coyotes are moving along in their rebuild with a number of great young talented players including Clayton Keller, Logan Cooley Sean Durzi and Matias Maccelli while the Ducks are building a strong young core of their own headlined by Trevor Zegras, Leo Carlsson and Mason McTavish.

These two teams are blossoming at around the same time which is perfect for a potential new rivalry between two franchises in dire need of winning.
