The Arizona Coyotes were aggressive this offseason which raises the question: are they ready to take a leap going into the 2023-24 season?
Over the past couple seasons, the Arizona Coyotes have finished at the bottom of the Western Conference standings.
Since general manager Bill Armstrong joined the Coyotes in 2019, he has made it abundantly clear that the team is in a rebuilding state. Armstrong’s strategy through his stint in Arizona has been simple: acquire as much young talent and draft picks as possible.
However, this offseason Armstrong took a different approach. He went out and acquired players that can help the team compete this upcoming season including Sean Durzi, Matt Dumba, Jason Zucker, Alexander Kerfoot and Nick Bjugstad.
While the Coyotes 28-40-14 record last season may not show it, the team played with a new found energy under coach André Tourigny and players such as Clayton Keller, Matias Maccelli, Barrett Hayton and J.J. Moser made major strides which ultimately helped Armstrong bring in all these free agents.
Top prospects Logan Cooley and Dylan Guenther are also expected to be in Arizona full time this season providing even more forward depth and excitement for the organization.
With the progress that Arizona has been able to make this offseason, the expectations for this team are certainly a bit higher.
The Coyotes are at a point in its rebuild where they have already accumulated young assets and now it's finally time to start building a winning foundation. There is no better year than this one to start making that jump from a rebuilding team to a unit that could steal a win on any given night.
Time will tell whether the Coyotes are even ready to make that sort of leap but this year could very well be a turning point in what has been a long rebuild.
