Even if there were no additions to the roster this summer, it doesn't bother defenceman Sean Durzi -- he just wants to win.

It's that want to play meaningful games that has been on everyone's mind within the Utah Hockey Club, from coaches to players to even the front office.

It's also the reason why Durzi, acquired via trade last spring, was rewarded with a 4-year, $24 million extension Sunday, solidifying a key piece of Utah's rebuild for the future.

Speaking to reporters Monday afternoon at the Hotel Park City, flanked by head coach Andre Tourigny and general manager Bill Armstrong, Durzi explained how getting to the point of playing those meaningful games will ultimately be a process.

"We studied (Sean) from the Owen Sound days," Armstrong said. "The special thing about him was his competitiveness. He's got it all day, and we needed that."

It also helps Durzi cut his teeth with the Los Angeles Kings, where he called the lessons learned from the veteran players key to his development.

"Sean wants to defend; he's willing to block shots and willing to do the dirty work," Tourigny said. "He's a really good player, but he's got the character to go with it."

And that's what excites Durzi most about the new additions, especially on the blue line with Mikhail Sergachev, John Marino, and Ian Cole, whom he feels can bring an added level of experience and competitiveness to the club.

"Everyone wants to have Stanley Cup rings, but the work starts now," Durzi stated. "It starts from learning and everyone getting better every day."
