Utah has a chance to truly remodel their team in their first off-season in the NHL. After taking over the Arizona Coyotes franchise, there have been numerous reports that the team wants to be aggressive this summer to help their team compete.
Utah has approximately $43 million in cap space and 13 draft picks in the upcoming draft and 10 the year after. Rather than drafting all 23 prospects in the next two drafts, they will likely flip some picks to acquire more talent.
While also using that $43 million in cap space, they can bid on the top stars in the open market, like Steven Stamkos, Brandon Montour, and Sam Reinhart, among others.
Utah will look to add some top-end forwards and have the chance to restructure their defence core from scratch. They also have a reliable starter in Connor Ingram and a backup goalie in Karel Vejmelka, who has the potential to be a great tandem.
However, it wouldn't be shocking if they looked to move Vejmelka and get a forward or defenseman in return. A handful of teams could use his services, like the Toronto Maple Leafs, Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, Los Angeles Kings, and Pittsburgh Penguins.
All of which would need to send likely either a middle-six forward or a bottom-four defenseman to Utah to make the deal work.
As for Utah, they can target a few goalies in free agency to help back up Ingram. One that comes to mind is Cam Talbot, a veteran netminder who had a great year with the Kings. His asking price won't be a lot, so they allocate money to other areas and he may be intrigued by the new hockey club.
Utah doesn't necessarily need to trade Vejmekla, but if they want Ingram to be their starter, they can easily find a reliable backup goalie and shed his $2.75 million off the books.
