Following an impressive few game stretch, Connor Ingram is set to start his second consecutive matchup putting an end to the Coyotes dual goalie rotation.
The Arizona Coyotes goaltending situation has been a little bit of a mystery.
Through the first 20 games of the season, Connor Ingram and Karel Vejmelka have split time evenly in net.
However, that will change for now as coach André Tourigny announced that Connor Ingram will start his second game in a row after recording a shutout against the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday night.
“We will need both of them during the season,” Tourigny said. “At certain stretches, one guy will take over, that will go in the other way. Right now Ingram has two stars in a row. It should not be a story, but the way we use our goalies to start the season it has become one.
“Let’s say Ingram plays five of the next seven, I don’t know, I'm just saying whatever. Later on, it will be the other way around. I assume Vejmelka will take the lead for a little bit. As long as we have a good goalie in the net every night, that's what we want.”
It’s clear that Ingram’s 7-3 record, 2.64 GAA and .920 SV% out way Vejmelka’s 2-6-2 record, 3.45 GAA and .892 SV%.
While Ingram may take over the role of ‘starting goalie’ for now, that may not be the case for the entirety of the season like Tourigny said.
Goaltenders get hot and cold so Vejmelka could very well serve as a critical piece for the Coyotes later on but right now Ingram gives the Coyotes the best chance to win, so it’s the right decision to give him most of the workload as he continues his hot play.
