The Arizona Coyotes made it official Monday announcing the signing of defenceman Matt Dumba.

The 28-year-old defenceman provides a lot to the Coyotes blue line which really excites general manager Bill Armstrong.

“We are very pleased to have Matt join our organization,” said Armstrong. “He is a talented, reliable, physical defenseman who competes hard every night and will contribute offensively. He is also a great leader who will add a veteran presence to our blue line. We are very excited to have him on our team this season.”

Dumba played 70 games for the Minnesota Wild this past season where he had four goals, 10 assists and 14 points.

While Dumba’s numbers have gone down over the past few seasons, he has proven in the past to be capable of producing offensively scoring 10 or more goals four times.

The strongest part of Dumba’s game is his consistency playing at his own end. The Coyotes have both Sean Durzi and J.J. Moser who are both offensive defenseman but the team is in need of a hard-nose player that can be an anchor defensively which Dumba is able to provide.

Arizona also has a younger defensive core and Dumba will bring a strong veteran presence to the locker room and can help mentor defencemen such as Moser, Victor Soderstrom and Juuso Valimaki who are still trying to unlock their full potential in the NHL.

Signing Dumba was a low-risk move for the Coyotes that could benefit them in a substantial way this upcoming season.
