How Canucks Elias Pettersson's Zone Faceoff Starts Could Be Impacting His Offensive Production
The Weekly Rewind: Vancouver Canucks Recaps From January 20 to 26, 2025
The Canucks victory on Monday was one of their most complete performances of the season. Their top players stepped up offensively, while the depth was able to shut down the Blues' offence for the majority of the night. Vancouver was even able to chase Jordan Binnington less than halfway through the game, which was the cherry on top of what was an exciting night of hockey.
While there were many standouts from Monday night, one player who deserves some praise is Lankinen. While he wasn't as busy as usual, the Canucks goaltender came up with some massive saves and even contributed offensively by picking up his fifth career assist. With the win, Lankinen also captured his 18th win of the season, which set a new career high and propelled him into a tie for tenth place in the NHL.
"He's been terrific," said Quinn Hughes post-game when asked about Lankinen. "Nice for him to get on the scoresheet. Can't really say enough about him. He's been terrific all year."
As mentioned, one of the main reasons Vancouver skated away with a victory was their top players stepped up. Elias Pettersson had an assist and seven shots, J.T. Miller had a goal, a fight and two shots, while Garland had two goals and six shots on net. Hughes also stepped up massively with two assists, while both Jake DeBrusk and Brock Boeser each ended the night with an assist. Moving forward, if the Canucks are going to go on a roll and build off this victory, they need their top players to replicate this type of performance on a nightly basis.
Lastly, a special shoutout goes to Tyler Myers, who easily his best game of the season. In his return from suspension, Myers recorded a goal, an assist, five shots on net, a takeaway and two blocked shots in 22:58 of ice time. While he still had some chaotic moments, like his tripping penalty in the second period, Myers was one of the best players on the ice, which is why he was named the game's third star.
In the end, Monday's performance was a step in the right direction for Vancouver. They looked energized throughout the game, with every player recording at least one positive statistic by the end of the night. Ultimately, there were a lot of positives from Monday night's performance, as the Canucks showed what they are capable of when the team plays as a unit.
