The Vancouver Canucks have made a splash on the first day of NHL Free Agency signing hulking defenseman Carson Soucy to a three-year deal worth $3.25 million per season.
The 28-year-old Viking, Alberta native stands 6'5" and weighs 208 pounds. Soucy had 3 goals and 16 points in 78 games for the Seattle Kraken last season. He also appeared in all 14 playoff games for the second-year franchise.
A fifth-round pick of the Minnesota Wild in 2013, the left-shot blueliner turned pro after four years of college hockey at Minnesota-Duluth. In 250 career NHL games with the Wild and Kraken, Soucy has 21 goals, 68 points and 186 penalty minutes.
Soucy excelled in a third-pairing role with the Kraken last season. The question is can he handle an increased role in Vancouver. The Canucks will be expecting him to make an immediate impact as a penalty killer and shot-blocker in Rick Tocchet's system.
