Since Hughes was born in 1999, the only defenceman to hit 100 points in a season was Erik Karlsson in 2022-23. Even the 90-point club is an elusive one, as Roman Josi, Cale Makar, and Hughes are the only other three to hit that mark in the last 25 years. Despite some high point totals over the past two and a half decades, the fact that only one defender has reached the century mark shows just how difficult it is to achieve the feat. The question now is, what does Hughes need to do to hit the 100-point mark? With 28 points through 23 games, Hughes needs 72 points over his 59 games, or an average of 1.22 points per game, to hit the century mark. While this is not impossible, it would mean Hughes needs to produce the exact same amount of points for the rest of the year to hit 100 on the dot. As mentioned, it is not an impossible task, but it would even be a challenge for some of the best forwards in the NHL to keep up that level of production for the rest of the season. While a 100-point season is a daunting task, it is hard to bet against Hughes hitting the mark. He continues to evolve his game and may even be better than last season when he took home his first Norris Trophy.
