In five games since the 4 Nations Face-Off, the Canucks have scored just ten goals and are averaging 24.4 shots per game. It is clear that the team is in a rut, with many players struggling to find the back of the net. Among the topics discussed was Vancouver's problematic scoring and shot generation this season. This is an issue that Tocchet is well aware of, and according to the head coach, it could come down to simply just getting pucks on the net. "I just think we had a couple of guys, like, you're down the pipe, you gotta shoot the puck," said Tocchet. "There's no reason to pass, and that's why I have a tough time with confidence. I'd rather a guy just rip the shot, but rip it and hit the net." Tocchet also discussed ways for players to get out of scoring slumps. Some of the Canucks top players have struggled to score over the past few weeks, including Elias Pettersson, who has no goals in 15 games and Brock Boeser, who has two in his last 13. According to Tocchet, who scored 440 times during the regular season in his NHL career, sometimes, keeping things simple can sometimes help break out of slumps. "We have people going to the net. That's how you get out of slumps. From my experience, my career, you're not going to get a pretty goal to get out of the slump. It's usually off a skate. It's a rebound goal, but you got to get there, and you got to be willing to have the courage to shoot those pucks. You got to move your feet. Like I said, people want all these fancy offensive systems; I just came from 4 Nations. Connor McDavid just attacks and shoots the puck. There's no tic-tac-toes. It's the same thing with us. We got to deliver pucks to the net. You got to be willing to get there, and you got to be willing to rip pucks and have all those details to do that." In the end, If Vancouver has intentions of making the postseason, they need to find a way to increase their offensive production. Yes, the top players need to be better, but so does the entire team, as 11 of the 18 players who played at least three of the last five games have two or fewer points. Ultimately, if the Canucks cannot sort out this scoring issue, it may not only cost them a spot in the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs but also could impact fan engagement for the rest of the season.
