Former Washington Capitals goaltender Ilya Samsonov has heard back about his next contract after taking the Toronto Maple Leafs to arbitration, and both sides will end up meeting in the middle.
Per Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, an arbitrator awarded Samsonov $3.55 million for his next contract. Since the two sides went to trial, his contract can only be for one year.
The Russian netminder had a high asking price during negotiations with Toronto, asking for $4.9 million. The Maple Leafs came back with a $2.4 million offer. Both sides failed to reach an agreement, and the RFA elected to file for arbitration.
Samsonov had an impressive bounceback campaign after signing a one-year, $1.8 million contract last offseason to join Toronto after he wasn't qualified by the Capitals. Through 42 games in 2022-23, the 26-year-old went 27-10-5 with a .919 save percentage and 2.33 GAA.
He also battled through injuries in the postseason to help the Maple Leafs advance past the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time in 19 years.
Prior to joining the Leafs on a low-risk deal, he had struggled to find consistency in Washington. Over three years in D.C., he recorded a .902 save percentage and 2.81 GAA.
