WASHINGTON — The Washington Capitals have officially gotten to work with the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline just a few days away.

Here's The Hockey News' official moves tracker, which follows all of the latest headlines, deals, news and notes leading up to March 8 at 3 p.m. ET.

    Washington Capitals Trades

FRIDAY, MARCH 8: Washington traded center Evgeny Kuznetsov to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a third-round pick. The Capitals will retain 50 percent of Kuznetsov's salary.

THURSDAY, MARCH 7: Washington traded defenseman Joel Edmundson to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a 2024 third-round pick (originally from the New York Islanders) and a 2025 fifth-round pick (originally from the Chicago Blackhawks). The Capitals will retain 50 percent of Edmundson's salary.

TUESDAY, MARCH 5: Washington traded forward Anthony Mantha to the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for a 2024 second-round pick and a 2026 fourth-round pick. The Capitals will retain 50 percent of Mantha's salary.

    Latest Washington Capitals Transactions

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 6: The Capitals signed defenseman Rasmus Sandin to a five-year, $23 million contract extension.

TUESDAY, MARCH 5: Kuznetsov reported to Hershey for his first practice in over 50 days and made a positive first impression with the Bears.

The Capitals also made another move, re-claiming forward Matthew Phillips off of waivers from the Pittsburgh Penguins just weeks after losing him to the same process. They assigned him directly to Hershey.

MONDAY, MARCH 4: Washington returned forward Pierrick Dubé to Hershey.

SUNDAY, MARCH 3: The Capitals assigned Kuznetsov to the AHL's Hershey Bears after he cleared waivers.

SATURDAY, MARCH 2: Washington placed forward Evgeny Kuznetsov on waivers as he was cleared to return to practice by the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program. Kuznetsov wants a change in scenery, and putting him on waivers is the first step for general manager Brian MacLellan to accommodate that request.

    Washington Capitals Notes

    - Nic Dowd will not play on Thursday against the Pittsburgh Penguins due to injury. D.C. is preparing for the possibility of life without him, as he's likely to be shipped out ahead of the deadline.

    - Washington is reportedly looking to "change up the mix" going into the deadline and is exploring multiple options ahead of the deadline. The hope, per Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, is to create flexibility and focus attention on players who may be available over the summer.

    - Meanwhile, MacLellan is trying to "thread a needle" going into the deadline, where the team will likely be selling but will also look to stay competitive and get younger.

"It's not, 'Hey, we're going to go out and rent a guy for the playoffs.' We're not in that game. We're here to look for opportunities to find more young players, add more young players to our roster and still compete," MacLellan said of the Capitals' approach.

"The strategy is the same. We're trying to thread a needle of being competitive and making good trades, and it might go either way on us," he added. "Our trade options are for younger, future-type stuff versus older, veteran players."
