Ron Chenoy — USA TODAY Sports - Report: Capitals Looking To Move Edmundson As Team Looks Ahead To Trade Deadline

The Washington Capitals are still pondering their trade deadline approach, but if the team can't bust out of its five-game slide, all signs point to selling. That said, there's another name on the roster that they are looking to move: Joel Edmundson.

Per Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the Capitals are looking to move on from the 30-year-old blueliner, who will become a UFA in July and carries a cap hit of $1.75 million.

The Capitals acquired Edmundson in a trade with the Montreal Canadiens on the opening day of 2023 NHL Free Agency. The 6-foot-5 defenseman is currently working on the third pairing alongside Nick Jensen.

Edmundson has a goal and two assists, as well as 28 hits, 41 blocks and a plus/minus rating of minus-3 through 32 games. He is known for his size and shutdown style, which he uses to make his opponents' lives difficult, and he's not afraid to get physical, either.

The 30-year-old is also a vocal leader in the dressing room and has nine years of NHL experience and multiple playoff runs under his belt, including a Stanley Cup run with the St. Louis Blues in 2019.

Overall, he can provide teams with a lot of depth, blue line security and a veteran presence to the table. It would also open a vacancy on the already-deep Capitals blue line, something the team needs with eight healthy defensemen competing for time. Ethan Bear and Alex Alexeyev are the current blueliners sitting out.

Edmundson is not the only player that is garnering attention going into the deadline. Per Friedman, Nic Dowd is also expected to generate significant interest.

The 2024 NHL trade deadline is on Friday, March 8 at 3 p.m. ET.
