The Washington Capitals are headed to the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

After missing out on the playoff last year for the first time in almost a decade, Washington will make its return to the postseason under first-year head coach Spencer Carbery following a 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.

Charlie Lindgren was stellar in his second start in as many nights, and T.J. Oshie sealed the deal with an unconventional empty-netter while Alex Ovechkin also scored.

Here are all the takeaways from the victory and D.C. will face off against the New York Rangers in the first round.

Capitals Defense Comes Up Big Again, Charlie Lindgren Stellar

The Capitals got a huge game from their blue line once again, as the shorthanded group and youth stepped up big time en route to two points.

John Carlson again played a pivotal role, leading all skaters with 29:12 minutes and managing a team-leading eight blocks. Dylan McIlrath also impressed in his third NHL game of the season and had a primary assist on Alex Ovechkin's goal.

Charlie Lindgren was also stellar in his second start in as many nights, stopping 25 of 26 shots. It was a gamble to go with him in net, but it was worthwhile as he was on his game and came up big when the team needed him the most.

Washington did a good job of limiting Philadelphia's high-octane offense and getting the puck out of harm's way, while several players also came up with some key blocks, including Dylan Strome and Beck Malenstyn. Washington blocked 32 total attempts.

Alex Ovechkin Gets Capitals On Board With Help From Dylan McIlrath, T.J. Oshie Seals Deal With Empty Netter

The Capitals also got a timely goal from their captain, as Alex Ovechkin buried his 31st of the season and career goal No. 853 on a deflection off a point shot from Dylan McIlrath.

Ovechkin has five goals in his last eight games. He needs just 42 more goals to pass Wayne Gretzky for the most in NHL history.

With three minutes left and the game still tied 1-1, John Tortorella pulled Samuel Ersson with Philadelphia needing a win in regulation. T.J. Oshie made no mistake, hitting the empty net to seal the deal.
