Here are where all the Capitals stack up with regard to their top speeds and speed bursts of over 20 MPH with the NHL's new player tracking statistics.

The Washington Capitals and head coach Spencer Carbery have been placing emphasis on pace and stressing the importance of speed to open 2023-24, and it's also an area where they've cited the need for improvement going forward.

And now, the league is providing more insight into team speed with a new tracking system called NHL EDGE. The website gives users insights into top player speeds with new puck and player tracking analytics.

And looking at the data, the Capitals could use some help in the speed department.

Twelve of the team's 20 skaters rank in the 50th percentile with regard to their top speed this season. The other eight rank higher.

Martin Fehervary takes the title as the team's fastest overall skater and fastest defenseman. Anthony Mantha and Beck Malenstyn are also the team's fastest forwards, with Mantha having a .01 edge in MPH but Malenstyn having more speed bursts of over 20 miles per hour.

Sonny Milano has had the most 20+ MPH speed bursts, with 14 to open the 2023-24 campaign.

At the other end of the spectrum, with the exception of Hardy Häman Aktell, who ahs just eight minutes of NHL action under his belt, Alex Alexeyev ranked last among defensemen with a top speed of 19.89 MPH this season, while Alex Ovechkin's 19.91 MPH top speed this season was last among the team's forwards.
