The Washington Capitals played the remainder of Saturday's 8-3 victory against the Pittsburgh Penguins without Tom Wilson, who left the game in pain after being cross-checked in front of the net by defenseman Ryan Graves.
Wilson was seen postgame wearing a brace around his back, and coach Spencer Carbery said there is a "little bit" of concern regarding the injury.
"We'll evaluate him tonight. I don't think it's anything crazy," Carbery said.
This wasn't Wilson's first run-in with Graves; last season, Graves caught Wilson with a high stick, leading to a major cut that needed stitches. Per TNT analyst Shane Hnidy, that led to an infection, and Wilson missed some time.
Wilson has appeared in all 56 games for Washington this season and has played through several bumps and bruises, including a break in the bones around his sinuses that led to significant swelling and four weeks in a full face shield. He was also hit in a similar spot in a game against the Calgary Flames a few weeks ago, when he took a cross-check to the ribs from Adam Klapka.
The 30-year-old alternate captain has remained an impact player for Washington this season and hit a new single-season career-high in goals in Saturday's win with his 25th of the season. He has five goals and seven points in his last five games overall, and he is on pace for a career-high 63 points.
