The Capitals captain has beat the most goalies in the history of the NHL.
Alex Ovechkin simply can't be stopped.
The Washington Capitals captain got back to doing what he does best on Thursday, scoring the overtime winner for a 1-0 victory over the Ottawa Senators and making even more history to boot.
Ovechkin picked up a pass from Rasmus Sandin late in the 3-on-3 extra frame and sniped a quick shot past rookie Leevi Meriläinen for his 874th career NHL goal.
Leevi Meriläinen joined an exclusive — but not enjoyable — club for goaltenders, becoming the 179th netminder that Ovechkin has beat over his 20-year career.
Ovechkin's goal on Meriläinen moved him past Jaromir Jagr for the all-time record of most goalies scored on in the history of the NHL.
Here's a full list from the team with every goaltender he's beaten. Marc-Andre Fleury and Henrik Lundqvist have given up the most to No. 8 (28 and 24 respectively), followed by Kari Lehtonen and Carey Price (22).
Not only that, but Ovechkin's goal was his 27th career overtime winner (which he already holds the record for), and he's now one goal away from tying Jagr for the most in NHL history.
Just two games ago, he became the second player in NHL history to record 20 goals in 20 consecutive seasons, joining Gordie Howe.
Then, there's the biggest record: the most goals of all time. He is now 21 away from passing Wayne Gretzky for that title.
Ovechkin is on pace to do that this year; with 21 goals in 29 games, he is on pace to finish with 48 goals, which would not only put him past 895 but above the 900 mark as well.
It's a remarkable time to be a hockey fan as he chases down what was thought once to be impossible. Now, it's more than achievable for the Russian.
