Sammi Silber/THN - Report: Ovechkin Applies To Trademark Phrase 'Russian Machine Never Breaks' In Russia

One of Alex Ovechkin's most iconic quotes from 2006 is now reportedly being trademarked by the Washington Capitals captain himself.

Ovechkin applied to register the famous saying with Rospatent, the Federal Service for Intellectual Property in Russia, per sports.ru. He also applied to register the logo for his international hockey academy.

Trademarks protect slogans. But if approved, the expression cannot be used without Ovechkin's consent, and he will be the exclusive rights-holder, meaning he can profit from that intellectual property, the report says. As of right now, this is only in Russia.

Rospatent added that the application "are at the stage of formal examination," and a decision could take up to five months to be made.

Ovechkin first uttered the phrase back on Oct. 26, 2006 in a post-practice media availability. The night before, he left the Capitals' tilt against the Colorado Avalanche, a 5-3 win, with 2.7 seconds to go in regulation after taking Shaone Morrisonn's wrist shot to the right leg. He had been helped off the ice, but the next day, he was at practice and back to normal.

When asked how he was feeling, he responded, "I'm okay. Russian machine never breaks."

Ovechkin has also trademarked "THE GR8 CHASE," which is the official name for his pursuit of Wayne Gretzky's all-time NHL goals record.

The 37-year-old currently sits at 822 career goals and is 73 away from passing Gretzky. He broke the all-time record for the most 40-goal campaigns this past year as well, despite dealing with injuries and missing four games following the death of his father.

Ovechkin has three years left on the five-year extension he signed to remain with Washington back in 2021. He and his family returned to Moscow for the offseason, where he plans to train again with Pavel Burlachenko.

The Capitals star is eager to return to D.C. and help his team return to top form after missing the playoffs for the first time in nine years.
