The Capitals captain is out for the next 4-6 weeks with a broken left fibula.
ARLINGTON, V.A. — Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin smiled wide as he strolled past the media room at MedStar Capitals Iceplex on Saturday, walking without anything on his leg and not needing crutches.
Ovechkin is out for the next 4-6 weeks with a broken left fibula that he suffered on a shin-on-shin collision with Jack McBain in Monday's win over Utah Hockey Club.
That injury hasn't stopped him from being around the team as much as possible. After attending the Washington Wizards game and sitting courtside on Friday at Capital One Arena, he was at the practice facility on Saturday and watched the team's morning skate.
Though he wasn't using a brace or additional support, he did have a bit of a limp.
Still, his teammates are happy to have him around the room, and are counting down the days until he gets back on the ice.
"Just having him around is always fun," Pierre-Luc Dubois told The Hockey News. "It seems like he's getting better and better every day. We're all really excited to see him back on the ice.
Tom Wilson added that Ovechkin remains in good spirits.
"He's saying he's gonna be back in no time," Wilson said.
Ovechkin's injury has his pursuit of Wayne Gretzky on pause and also comes at a tough time as he was heating up at the time of the fracture. Through 18 games this season, the 39-year-old posted a league-leading 15 goals and 10 assists for 25 points.
He is just 27 away from breaking Gretzky's record, and if he can keep up that same pace, could still potentially break the record when he eventually returns.
