The Capitals brought up Hunter Shepard with the team now dealing with an ailment between the pipes.

The Washington Capitals are navigating quite a few injuries as they embark on a two-game road swing, and joining that long list is goaltender Darcy Kuemper.

Head coach Spencer Carbery told reporters in New Jersey on Friday that Hunter Shepard was recalled Darcy Kuemper was "nicked up" against the Florida Panthers. The 33-year-old is out for Friday's game against the Devils, though he participated in the morning skate, per NHL.com's Mike Morreale.

Charlie Lindgren will get the start in New Jersey, with Shepard, who made his NHL debut on Oct. 25 against the Devils, serving as the second chair.

Lindgren last played on Saturday, shining with a 34-save effort to lead Washington to a 2-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. He has a .929 save percentage through two outings this season.

Beyond Kuemper, Washington is also operating without the services of Anthony Mantha (upper-body) after he was struck in the left side of the head by a puck on Wednesday, as well as defensemen Trevor van Riemsdyk (lower-body) and Joel Edmundson (hand). Max Pacioretty (Achilles) still has ways to go but recently started skating again.

On a more positive note, the Capitals will see a key name make his return from injury on Friday, as Nic Dowd is expected to play after missing the last nine games with an upper-body ailment. Nicolas Aube-Kubel, who was recalled with Shepard on Friday, will also draw in and make his season debut with Mantha out.

Puck drop is at 7 p.m. ET at Prudential Center.
