The Washington Capitals got discouraging news on the injury front on Monday, as Martin Fehervary is now listed as week-to-week with a lower-body injury.
Head coach Spencer Carbery told reporters after Monday's optional practice that he will be out for the next stretch.
"Whether it's one or two, that's what we're looking at," Carbery said.
Fehervary was hurt in the opening minutes of Saturday's 4-3 win over the Montreal Canadiens when he lost an edge while skating behind the Capitals' net. His leg appeared to buckle under him, and Fehervary was slow to get up and didn't put much weight on his left leg as he made his way to the bench. Head athletic trainer Jason Serbus and Anthony Mantha helped Fehervary off.
It's a tough loss for Washington, who is six points out of a playoff spot and is making one final push with 29 games left on the regular season circuit. Fehervary plays a pivotal role, skating on the top pairing and providing physicality. He leads all defensemen with 114 hits this season and also has 74 blocks.
The Capitals do have a number of options to fill his role, though. Ethan Bear and Alex Alexeyev are the two extra defensemen, and Trevor van Riemsdyk can also play the left side, meaning that boh are options to draw back into the mix.
It could also be the opportunity Alexeyev needs to try and draw in on a consistent basis following a number of healthy scratches.
Washington next plays Tuesday when they host the New Jersey Devils.
