First Look As Matt Roy & Logan Thompson Arrive In D.C., Join Capitals Informal Skates

The Capitals added Roy and Thompson this offseason.

The Washington Capitals are getting back to work ahead of the 2024-25 NHL season, and two new faces joined informal skates on Monday at MedStar Capitals Iceplex.

Defenseman Matt Roy and goaltender Logan Thompson, who were both brought in as part of the team's roster overhaul, skated with the team on Monday as part of the pre-training camp workout sessions. John Carlson and Alex Alexeyev have also been taking part in the skates.

Goaltending coach Scott Murray was also on the ice.

Washington signed Roy to a six-year contract to open free agency as the team revamped its blue line by also trading for Jakob Chychrun and parting ways with Nick Jensen.

The 29-year-old blueliner spent the first part of his career with the Los Angeles Kings, picking up 24 goals and 106 points, along with a plus/minus of plus-67, through 369 games. This past season, Roy had 25 points in 81 regular-season games and two assists in five playoff games.

Thompson, meanwhile, was acquired from the Vegas Golden Knights in a trade at the 2024 NHL Draft. He replaces Darcy Kuemper, who was traded to the Kings for Pierre-Luc Dubois just over a week earlier.

The 27-year-old netminder is expected to make up a 1A/1B tandem with Charlie Lindgren, who proved to be the bonafide starter for D.C. last season.

In 103 career games with Vegas, Thompson boasted a 56-32-11 record with a .912 save percentage and 2.67 GAA. He was an All-Star in 2023, but injuries and inconsistency resulted in him registering a .908 save percentage in 46 games last season with the Golden Knights while falling out of the picture as the No. 1.

Training camp will start for Washington in September.
