The Washington Capitals took things outside on the second day of their rookie camp on Sunday, as the team headed to the Naval Academy in Annapolis for some on-ice work at McMullen Hockey Arena and team building on the outdoor ropes course.
Vincent Iorio and Hendrix Lapierre again took charge, as both highlighted the zipline as the prospects lined up to take part in U.S. Naval Academy Challenge Course. He flipped upside down shortly after descending. They also recreated a famous scene from "I Think You Should Leave" with the zipline.
Other challenges included balancing on a tight rope, climbing and much more on Day 2.
This is the first time that the Capitals have brought rookie camp to the Naval Academy and the first time the team is skating in Annapolis since the 2018 Stadium Series. The goal for Washington is to introduce the prospects to team-building activities and get them acclimated on and off the ice before the start of training camp on Thursday.
Iorio and Lapierre have impressed with their superior skating and pro demeanor so far, but watching the prospects, it's easy to see that several other skaters have also taken big steps forward. Alexander Suzdalev and Andrew Cristall made major improvements to their skating and play. Ryan Leibold, an Ashburn, V.A. native and South Carolina Stingrays forward, has also looked impressive.
It was a nice change of pace from an intense Day 1 on Saturday, which featured workouts, sprints, a skating test and some hard puck battles.
The Capitals will hold two more days of rookie camp before it closes out on Tuesday. Then, training camp begins on Thursday, with the skate test headlining the first on-ice sessions.
