Sammi Silber - The Hockey News - Capitals Wrap: Tom Wilson Training Hard For Season, Cam Allen Faces Setback With Shoulder Surgery

The Washington Capitals are just a little over a month away from the start of training camp, and Tom Wilson is making the most of his fully healthy summer.

Wilson said that this offseason has been "way better" in terms of training and conditioning after he spent last summer recovering and rehabbing after surgery to repair a torn ACL.

The 29-year-old said he is no longer feeling the effects of that major knee injury, which he suffered in the opening minutes of Game 1 of the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs. It held him out for approximately eight months, and he made his return to the lineup on Jan. 8 of this past season. He also suffered a broken ankle in February but is fully recovered.

"I'm feeling really good. The injury was tough, it was a tough year. But you get to that 12-month mark and beyond, and it's in the rearview. I don't focus on it at all anymore," Wilson said. "I'm just going about my training like I would any other summer.

"That's really allowed me to have fun in the gym again and get after it and get strong and work hard and focus on the things that will prepare me for the season... It's been a great summer. It's been fun to get back on the ice and just train hard and not have any of those worries."

In other organizational injury news, prospect Cam Allen, who is entering his third year for the OHL's Guelph Storm, suffered a difficult setback. He is undergoing shoulder surgery, which will hold him out until the new year.

Washington's 2023 fifth-rounder will undergo the procedure on Aug. 30. Storm general manager George Burnett told Guelph Today that Allen had played through injury last season and tweaked his shoulder "a little bit" at Capitals development camp in July.

The 18-year-old, who was the No. 46 ranked North American skater but fell to the Capitals at No. 136 following difficult draft year, impressed the front office with a strong camp. However, he will have to wait until after January to show he can bounce back with the Storm and prove Washington right.

"Better to get it done and get him to 100 percent," Burnett added. "The bottom line is he's got to get it looked after."
