Sammi Silber - The Hockey News - Tom Wilson Named Capitals Nominee For King Clancy Memorial Trophy

ARLINGTON, V.A. -- While making a major comeback from a torn ACL this season, Tom Wilson also took the time to give back to the D.C. community, and in turn, he has been selected as the Washington Capitals nominee for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy.

The King Clancy Memorial Trophy is given annually "to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community."

Wilson made a major impact in just 33 games this season, picking up 22 points and serving as an important leader and top contributor down the stretch. Away from the ice, though, he worked hard to serve the D.C. community in several ways.

The 29-year-old has a program called "Forty Three's Friends," where he donates tickets and spends time with Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic children. Wilson has also worked in the So Kids Can program, which donates and works with nonprofits to improve the lives of local youth and better the community. He has also been involved with the Top Shelf Teammates program, KaBoom! playground building program and several other initiatives.

Wilson also consistently volunteers at Wolf Trap Animal Rescue, helping with the intake of puppies, kittens and other animals at risk of euthanization.

This season, Wilson also reconnected with an 18-year-old named Will Mumford and teamed up with Nicklas Backstrom to grant Mumford's wish to unveil a Weagle's art piece at MedStar Capitals Iceplex. In addition, he helped local goalie Ilan Shterenberg present a Caps-themed adaptive bike to 8-year-old Lamar Collado, who is unable to stand, sit or walk and has fought through epilepsy, low muscle tone and other conditions that have impacted his fine motor skills.

This season, players have the option to fundraise for a particular cause  June 27, and Wilson has chosen to fundraise for So Kids Can, with the funds earmarked for the D.C.-based nonprofit Playtime Project.

The King Clancy winner and other NHL Awards winners will be announced on June 26 at the awards show in Nashville. That player will receive a $25,000 donation to benefit a charity or charities of his choice, and the two other finalists will receive a $5,000 donation.

Wilson was nominated for the award back in 2019, and it has been awarded each year since 1988. The only Capitals player to ever win was Olaf Kolzig in 2006. Garnet Hathaway has been the team's nominee over the last few seasons.
