Tom Wilson will head to his second NHL All-Star Game in three years.
Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson was sitting in the locker room with his teammates when Spencer Carbery played a video on the projector. To Wilson's surprise, it was his father on the screen, telling him the news of his second NHL All-Star Game selection.
Wilson will be Washington's representative at the 2024 NHL All-Star Weekend in his hometown of Toronto, a feat that will bring No. 43's family — including his 95-year-old grandfather — out to Scotiabank Arena to watch him on the world's biggest stage.
“We just learned that you will have the honor to represent the Washington Capitals at the 2024 NHL All-Star Game in your hometown of Toronto," Wilson's father said in the video, which led to cheers erupting throughout the dressing room. " We will all be there to cheer you on, and your 95-year-old Grampie will be so pumped when he hears the news. Go, Tom.”
Wilson also earned high praise from head coach Spencer Carbery for making the cut.
"To earn that honor, someone who (brings offense) but also does everything he can for the team and puts the team in front of himself, plays the right way every night, I think that’s a hell of an accomplishment for Willy," Carbery said.

For Wilson, getting the news from his father was an emotional moment, especially when he heard that he would get to share the experience with his family back home.
"He had a lot of information to cover there, it's pretty special," Wilson told Mike Vogel. "For us and for me, when you're playing the game of hockey and you've had a career that spans over a punch of years, the most special thing is sharing it with family."
Wilson, who has the fastest goal in All-Star Game history after scoring just 13 seconds into the semifinal game of 3-on-3 tournament back in 2022, participated in the hardest shot competition in his first go-around. He had filled in for Alex Ovechkin then, but this year, he was nominated over the likes of the captain and others. He has 19 points in 36 games so far this season, along with 107 hits and 19 drawn penalties.
"It’ll be pretty special. I had a blast in Vegas. It was really an amazing weekend. you kinda get to see the NHL on the biggest stage. There's a lot of excitement, it’s a good time, you get to see all the players," Wilson told Vogel. "Obviously being in Toronto, in my hometown, I'm looking forward to being in that building looking around and it’ll be pretty full circle having grown up as a kid there, having family and friends support you, it’s gonna be awesome.”
Wilson is one of the initial 32 representatives from each team, but he could be joined by a teammate depending on how the fan vote goes.
Sitll, Wilson noted that it will be nice to be on the same side as some of the NHL's greats rather than facing them for a change.
"You meet so many great guys and they’re the superstars around the league. Usually, my job is kinda making their life difficult to the best of my ability, but there’s so many great guys in the game of hockey. I really enjoy that part of it, just getting to meet all the guys that you compete against every night," Wilson said. "It’s a ton of skill, everyone's excited, it’s just a really good atmosphere and really good vibe.
"It's a huge privilege to be going to my second one. As you go throughout your career, it’s a huge honor, it’s a huge privilege, it’s a big thanks to a lot of my teammates and coaches that have helped me get to that point to go and be able to represent the Caps. I'm excited for it.”
