The Capitals will continue to play both Lindgren and Thompson.

The Washington Capitals are headed into a difficult back-to-back against the Philadelphia Flyers, where they’ll again be utilizing both Charlie Lindgren and Logan Thompson.

Lindgren will play Tuesday and Thompson on Wednesday. It’s routine for both netminders to play one of each game in a back-to-back, but this continues Spencer Carbery’s rotation of Lindgren and Thompson, who have switched off games to open the year.

And for D.C., rotating between both is the right move.

Both Lindgren and Thompson have shown strong play to open the year with two strong wins, but also flaws, each surrendering five goals in respective games against the Devils.

Lindgren has a .893 save percentage to start the year, while Thompson has a .877. It’s still early after only two starts for each, but as both continue to get acclimated, it’s wise to rotate both and go with the hot hand.

After all, Lindgren’s showing last season helped him rise to prominence as a promising starting option for D.C., but Thompson’s upside and impressive play over the years makes him more of a 1B option than a backup.

Also, utilizing both goalies allows each to get ample rest and preparation, and it also gives Carbery and the coaching staff time to evaluate both as Washington balances two reliable options.

At the end of the day, there’s nothing wrong with rotating between the two, and actually, it could stand to benefit the Capitals if they both maintain consistency and work well with one another. 

The rotation also allows both to shine in the competition with one another, which should then set D.C. up with one starter emerging down the road.
