The Washington Capitals own the 17th overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, and one of the potential top names that could still be available by the time D.C. is on the clock is USHL forward Trevor Connelly.

The Tri-City Storm left winger is the sixth-ranked North American skater, coming in at 6-foot, 156 pounds. In 52 games this year, he had 31 goals and 47 assists for 78 points, along with 88 penalty minutes.

But what makes Connelly such a highly-touted prospect?

The 18-year-old is a major offensive threat who is merciless when on the attack. Connelly skates with aplomb and owns a wicked shot, and his quick hands and high hockey IQ help him make highlight-reel plays — and finish them.

His stickhandling and skating also work well in tandem, and he's not afraid to add a little flair to his game, either. One instance is when he pulled off the Michigan this year at the U18 Worlds.

Not only that, but Connelly can get to the high-danger areas and make space for him on the ice, and he doesn't shy away from puck battles or getting physical.

Still, he needs to add some muscle and size to his frame, and he needs to get stronger in his own zone as well. Consistency is also key for the Tustin, California native, as well as staying disciplined and maintaining his awareness at both ends of the ice.

With Connelly, Washington would get another promising forward with a lot of upside that can provide offense and bolster a power play. Of course, he won't be an NHLer overnight, but he'd add to an already impressive forward pool that includes Ryan Leonard, Andrew Cristall, Ivan MIroshnichenko and many more.

Looking at his skillset, numbers and potential, Connelly, who could go higher, should definitely be on D.C.'s radar if he's still up for grabs.
