The Capitals recalled the 27-year-old in wake of an injury to Sonny Milano.

The Washington Capitals needed another left winger to come aboard with Sonny Milano going on injured reserve, and the next man up was Joe Snively.

Snively earned his first call-up of the season for the Capitals on Thursday after putting up 21 points in 25 games to open the season with the AHL's Hershey Bears.

At the end of the day, there's a reason why Carbery went for the 27-year-old's services over the likes of Ivan Miroshnichenko or other wingers waiting in the wings: success, productivity and familiarity with the team, the coaching staff and the systems.

"He's been having a great year in Hershey and has played here in the past," Carbery said. "I'm very familiar with him."

The 41-year-old head coach added that Snively has also earned the opportunity after bouncing back from an underwhelming performance while competing for a roster spot at the beginning of the year.

"Didn't think he had the camp that was necessarily reflective of what he's capable of at the NHL level," Carbery added. "With him playing well, we thought it'd be a good opportunity to give him a look."

As for why the team didn't recall Miroshnichenko for the first time, there's no rush on the Russian winger, as he still has ways to go when it comes to his play without the puck and growth on and off the ice.

Snively will remain up with the big club while Milano works his way back from an upper-body injury he suffered over the weekend. The Herndon, Virginia native played on the third line and skated just 6:31 minutes in Thursday's loss to the Phialdelphia Flyers.

Washignton is currently in Nashville for the first game of a back-to-back series. The Capitals will face the Predators on Saturday and then head to Raleigh immediately after for a Sunday night showdown with the Carolina Hurricanes just 24 hours later.
