Eric Bolte — USA TODAY Sports - Report: Dowd 'Very Much' On Oilers' Radar Going Into Trade Deadline, Edmonton Could Also Consider Mantha

The Washington Capitals are still mulling over their approach to the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline, but their players are generating quite a bit of interest, and most recently, that's coming from the Edmonton Oilers.

Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman joined Bob Stauffer on 630 CHED's Oilers Now to discuss the Oilers' approach to the trade deadline, where he mentioned that Dowd is "very much" on Edmonton's radar while Anthony Mantha could also draw interest.

"I do think Dowd is on your radar... do you look at Mantha, what price are you willing to pay? What are you going to decide is your biggest need?" Friedman said on the show, adding, "I do think they're looking at Dowd, I think he's someone you guys have considered. [With Mantha] there's a limit to the price you're willing to pay... Dowd is very much on your radar."

Dowd, who is currently day-to-day with an upper-body injury, has reportedly been generating league-wide interest thanks to his role as a top defensive center and the one year left on his contract at $1.3 million. Through 45 games this season, Dowd has eight goals and eight assists, and he also leads the team in defensive zone draws and is the top penalty killer in the District.

He could bring in a significant return given his value, though Washington may not be in sell-off mode if the team continues to trend closer to a playoff spot.

Mantha, meanwhile, is having his best season yet with the Capitals and has 18 goals and 14 assists for 32 points in 54 games. He carries a cap hit of $5.7 million, but he will become an unrestricted free agent in July and could be a good rental option that can add depth and scoring up front.

When it comes to what the Oilers have to offer, Edmonton has a 2024 first-rounder and reportedly also has defensive prospect Philip Broberg on the block. The team also has a second-rounder, fifth-rounder and two sixth-rounders in 2024 and first-round picks for the next two years.

Washington sits six points out of playoff position and has not made up its mind as to whether or not to sell yet, but the Oilers could certainly be trading partners if general manager Brian MacLellan decides to offload at the deadline.

The 2024 NHL Trade Deadline is on Friday, March 8 at 3 p.m. ET.
